Natural Death vs. Natural Birth

Hi, my name is Jane Hillhouse, and I am the founder of Final Footprint, the leading resource for natural burial products in the United States. As you can tell by the business that I am in, I have a passion for making the end of life, the only thing that is even more certain for all of us than taxes, a part of the natural process flow that we are all subjected to by the most immutable laws of nature. In order to increase awareness of the natural end of life process, I am writing this column, which will appear on our website, at least every other week, if not more (if I can find the time). I’d like to start out by contrasting the natural death process with the natural birth and early life process in the United States. Natural child birth has been growing by leaps and bounds over the last 50 years. More and more births are done at home, with no anesthesia, delivered by midwives, etc. Even conventional medicine has come around to favor natural birth, over the alternatives. After birth, parents are now urged to breast feed. Even more extreme, but growing rapidly are groups touting eating the placenta, co-sleeping with your infant, and attachment parenting. Let’s contrast this with the natural death movement in the United States. Most of us have heard of these early life movements, but very few of us have heard of any natural death movement. To make matters worse, we know nothing the death industry in the United States. Most of us would be shocked to learn the casket we are buried or cremated in, the funeral home that conducts the ceremony, and the cemetery where we finally come to rest are likely all controlled by a small consortium of monopolistic companies whose only interest is selling you as much crap as they can during your, so called “hour of need”.  No one in the natural death movement begrudges the attention paid on all the organizations that focus on early life. We just wish people would realize that death is as much a part of life as birth, and provide some focus upon it. That is what I am writing this. Please watch my columns.
